| Orvieto is Umbria's most famous wine. Because of its popularity with the Vatican elite, Orvieto has always been called the "Wine of Popes". Legend holds that Bernardino di Betto, the Italian painter nicknamed Il Pinturicchio, had an unlimited supply of the wine while he created the Frescoes of the Cathedral of Orvieto. In 1931, the Italian Government established a Classico zone for the central and best areas of Orvieto. Those areas are the source of the grapes for Bigi's Orvieto Classico. Vinification is very careful and modern. State of the art equipment is used for soft pressing, followed by cold fermentation of the free run juice.
